Microsoft
Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT) is reportedly building an Xbox set-top box. A number
of sources, who have knowledge about Redmond’s plans, have confirmed The Verge
that the company has plans of releasing a cost-efficient option to its Xbox
console that will be designed to offer access to core entertainment services. The
move will let Microsoft to increase its prominence all the more in the living
room, providing its customers with an option to choose between a set top box and
a full next-generation Xbox console.

The Verge has
information that set top box is a part of a two-SKU approach for the
next-generation Xbox hardware of Microsoft that will be introduced in the year
2013. The device will operate on the core components of Windows 8 and support
casual games instead of full Xbox games that are generally found on a dedicated
console. Even though hardware specification are not completely locked down, it
is understandable that Microsoft will implement a chipset to enable an ‘always
on’ device that starts up promptly and resumes to supply near-instant access to
TV and entertainment services.
Microsoft’s Xbox
set-top box is believed to be a part of a wider attempt to make sure its core
architecture for the advanced Xbox is scalable enough to be assembled together
to operate on a number of gadgets. It can be understood that the company could
choose to combine its core system for the upcoming Xbox with a phone stack to
offer a phone that is capable of running a full version of Xbox Live services
from Microsoft. It has also probed into providing this feature to TV OEMs that
could include the basic services as part of an authorized Xbox television set.
On being asked to
comment on Xbox set top boxes, Microsoft said that Xbox 360 has discovered new
horizons to extend the lifecycle of the console by introducing controller-free
experiences with Kinect and re-discovering the console with a fresh dashboard.
